Telematic performance with 6 performers
May 29th 2010 8.30 pm

Netherlands Media Art Institute
Keizersgracht 264
1016 EV Amsterdam

Part of the Performmikka Internettikka event curated by Petra Heck

6 Netartists will use an interface in which they share from their isolated positions scattered in space each in front of their webcam, a combined image- and soundspace of expression and responsibility, a playground, a laboratory.
They will challenge one another into collective actions.
What will happen when they will only use their mother tongue and code to communicate?

Annie Abrahams - in Amsterdam (NIMk) will only speak Dutch
Ruth Catlow - in London will only speak English
Paolo Cirio - in London will only speak Italian
Ursula Endlicher - in New York will only speak German
Nicolas Frespech - in Montélimar will only speak French
Igor Stromajer - in Hamburg will only speak Slovenian

The invited performers know each other via the Web. Their communication has always been mediated by machines and thus has always suffered from its weaknesses and benefited from its strength. Because they will not speak a common language their communication will be reduced to an exchange of sounds and gestures. The body, normally so absent in front of a computer, will be hyper present in this performance.

Any malfunctioning will be part of the game and must be assumed, never panic.
Nothing can go wrong, all is permitted, we can play but we don't have to – silence is beautiful.

Video short 8 min version

Full 30 min version

What can we do together and why should we? What is left of communication when we don't share a common language to use while technological means create supplementary distortions? How to construct unity where there is none besides a mutual interest in art and the Internet? How, in front of an interface where you can see yourself all the time ,to be more attentive to the others than to your own actions? How to both overcome and respect our differences?

Igor wasn't understood by anyone. He understood us all.
Ruth was understood by all, but didn't understand any one of the others.
Nicolas was understood by Annie, Ursula and Igor. He only understood Ruth.
Usula was understood by Annie and Igor. She understood all but Igor.
Annie was understood by Igor and Ursula. She understood Nicolas, Ruth and Ursula.

"In a way I found this performance very political: it showed us all the tensions of being both unique and multiple, the difficulties both technical and relational that entails having to invent a common ground that does not erase any particularities." Bérénice Belpaire.

Shifts, interruptions, cuts, flux variations, temporary vacuums and coding errors in and between the images, are the aesthetic materials of the performance that will translate our vulnerability in our attempts to communicate in a cyberized environment.
